Words from our founder
Like you, I came to this country for new opportunities. More than 20 years ago, I arrived with my suitcase and 300 dollars in my pocket. After graduating as a psychologist and working in the women’s prison in Bogotá, Colombia, things fell into place for me to come to New Jersey to learn more about domestic violence. I intended to stay for three months. However, I had the opportunity to pursue my master’s degree at New York University (NYU). Upon graduating, I had the option to return to my country or stay here and help other immigrants. As you can imagine, I decided to stay and continue helping.
I faced the sadness of leaving my family, my people, and my culture and began my process of healing and transformation. That is why I continued studying and specializing in issues related to immigrants, acculturation, trauma, and mental health conditions. I allowed this new country, its customs, culture, and beautiful people. I realized that I could not deny who I am or where I come from, but at the same time, I saw the importance of adapting, assimilating, and recognizing the particularities of this new space.
With my studies, professional licenses in the United States, experience, and healing and transformation process, Muunar was born.

Mónica C Roldán, MSW, LCSW.
